SEO : Buying Good Domains

Millions of domains are purchased, then never used. They just sit on file, while the owner dreams that one day he'll get an email out of the blue offering him a zillion dollars for something that cost him practically nothing!

That may be true for the one word .COM domain names registered before 1996, but the other 99% of registered domain names sink into obscurity... until they expire and get renewed by another dreamer.

Older domains rank better

Newly registered domains are contained by Google in what it calls its "sandbox", which experts believe stops a domain from ranking too high until it is at least 8 or 9 months old.

Therefore promoting more established domains can work better, as they generally get ranked higher in search results.

Expired domain names

Domains expire every day, either because they are no longer needed or because the owner forgot to renew it. A Google search for 'expired domains' will show you some of the sources of expired domains.

Expired domains sometimes have an established page rank, which is worth checking before acquiring.

How many pages of the domain are currently indexed?

That's an easy one. First type site:[domainname] into Google and see all pages currently registered in its index.

eg. site:msn.com

Then click on the cached link to see a copy of the page that is stored in the search engine index.

What was the domain used for before?

Finally visit www.archive.org to view all old copies of the website.
