SEO : Meta Keywords Tag
Meta tags convey behind-the-page information. Some search engines ignore them, others
don't.
To finish our library metaphor, you go to the desk and ask the librarian to search
all books tagged with a certain word or phrase. This is the equivalent to our keywords
tag.
Be brief, exact, and relevant to your page content. And above all, focus on the page
keyphrase (which should the same as the filename). Adding in a few other keywords will not dilute the page too much, but the author has noticed a marked increase in effectiveness with short targeted keyword strings.
Example
<html>
<head>
<title>Green Widgets</title>
<META name="description" content="Green Widgets for sale from Wonderful-Widgets.com,
your no.1 resource for green widgets!">
<META name="keywords" content="green widgets, widgets for sale">
</head>
<body>
<H1>Green Widgets</H1>
<p>Green widgets first made an appearance in 1920, when the first green widget was
discovered by Sir Randolf Widget III.
</body>
</html>

Do...
- put the keywords tag directly after the descriptions tag
- zero in your page keyphrase - don't get sidetracked!
|
 |
Don't...
- keyword "stuff" (ie. repeat your keyword more than twice)
- use more than 200-250 characters (in fact, less is more as it seems more specialized)
- don't use brand and company names without prior permission - you can get into trouble
