Email newsletters are an excellent way of building traffic, and getting prospective customers who once showed interest in your products/services BACK to your site for a second look.
The sites that dominate the first page of Google, MSN, and Yahoo are are always the ones that offer a newsletter, which is sent out by email every 1-3 months.
In a newsletter you can re-kindle interest in your product/service/community, by
telling visitors about:
Include pictures as well as text, like a magazine page. Make it INTERESTING, something
that you yourself would be interested to read.
Keep this simple. On your home page or global footer put a signup box, which captures the name of the user and their email address into your database. The text in the sign up box should be relaxed and inviting, something like "please keep me updated on product/company developments".
Also be sure to include a privacy link by the box, which links to your page assuring the prospective customer that you won't sell on or do something unpleasant with their email address.
First check with your web host to see if they already offer newsletter scripts with your account, which can save you a lot of time. If not, check for scripts in web script directories such as Hotscripts.com
Writing your own mailing script is also quite easy, and should take no more than a few hours to write and test.
More advanced scripts can track if your mail has been:
a) received
b) read
c) acted upon
Measuring the effectiveness of your mail campaigns should be your long term goal (in particular which mails resulted in a sale, and the profit margins of that sale).
Once you have built up a decent subscriber base, you could sell advertising space
to other websites/companies who want to reach the same subscriber base.
